CBI Court sentences 06 accused including then IGP of Punjab Police, Gautam Cheema, an IDES officer and 04 private persons to 8 Months Imprisonment with fine in a case of forcibly detaining a person from custody of Mohali Police Station
The Special Judge for CBI cases, Punjab, Mohali, on Friday sentenced six accused including Gautam Cheema, IPS, then IGP of Punjab Police; Ajay Chaudhary, IDES and 04 private persons namely Varun Utreja (then Advocate); Ms. Rashmi Negi, Vicky Verma and Aryan Singh to 08 months Imprisonment with total fine of Rs. 39,000/- in a case of forcibly detaining a person from the lawful custody of PS-Phase-I, Mohali (Punjab).
CBI had registered the instant case in compliance of the orders of Hon’ble High Court dated 04.03.2020 transferring to the CBI the investigation of FIR, earlier registered at PS-Phase-I, Mohali. The matter pertains to forceful apprehension of Sumedh Gulati from lawful custody of PS Phase-I, Mohali by the accused Gautam Cheema, IPS; Shri Ajay Chaudhary, IDES & 04 others.

The matter pertains to forceful apprehension of Sumedh Gulati from lawful custody of PS Phase-I, Mohali by the accused Gautam Cheema, IPS; Shri Ajay Chaudhary, IDES & 04 others.
It was alleged that on August 26, 2014, at approximately 11:00 PM, Gautam Cheema, IPS, the then IGP, in an inebriated state, along with Ajay Choudhary and others, arrived at Police Station Phase-I, Mohali and forcibly took Sumedh Gulati (who had been arrested earlier that day in connection with another case) in a private car to Max Hospital, Phase-6, Mohali, where a complainant was admitted. It is further alleged that Gautam Cheema forcibly detained Sumedh Gulati in the same room and threatened the said complainant, demanding that she withdraw complaints filed against him.
After completion of investigation, CBI filed chargesheet on 31.12.2020 against six accused. After trial, the Court found accused guilty and sentenced them accordingly.
