A day before the Deepotsav, also recognised as “Chhoti Diwali”, the Abohar Chemists Association took a highly commendable initiative, setting an example of humanity.
Special arrangements were made to provide packed meals (Langar) for those in need who sell their goods while sitting on the footpaths and dividers; an appeal was also made to the public to purchase items from these vendors.
Speaking on behalf of the Association, President Arjun Demla said, “With the heartfelt desire to ensure that the joy of Diwali reaches everyone, the Abohar Chemists Association decided to arrange packed meals for those who sell their wares on the sidewalks. Furthermore, we have also urged the city’s residents to make purchases from these small-scale vendors—who operate from the sidewalks—this Diwali, so that the light of happiness may also shine in their homes.”
Praveen Chawla, convener of the Joint Forum of Social and Religious Organisations, said, “Most of the vendors’ families prepare the goods inside their houses and get a platform for sale only near Diwali. They don’t get time to go to their homes for lunch-breaks. For them, the packed meal- served by the Abohar Chemists Association- was a pleasant and delicious surprise.”
