Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring today said that the government was duty bound to consult the Akal Takht on Sikh religious affairs before formulating any laws.
He said that it had been agreed in an agreement signed between first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and the Akali leader Master Tara Singh in 1959, which was referred to by the Jathedar also.
The PCC president hoped that the government would take note of the Akal Takht instructions and bring in the amendments and changes as advised by the Takht. He pointed out, even the British rulers did not make any law unilaterally without consulting the Sikh community.
Warring also took strong exception to the Sikh MLAs of the Aam Aadmi Party waiting for the party supremo Arvind Kejriwal’s nod about attending the meeting convened by the Akal Takht Jathedar.He said, since it was a religious matter and not a party matter as they had been called to Akal Takht as Sikhs, like other Sikh MLAs from other parties, they did not need anybody’s permission for that including their party supremo.
