PUNJAB ANNOUNCES MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS; VOTING IN 8 MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS INCLUDING MOHALI ON MAY 26, MODEL CODE OF CONDUCT COME INTO FORCE WITH IMMEDIATGE EFFECT

Punjab has announced the municipal elections, and with this, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect.

 Punjab State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhary addressed a press conference and informed that voting will be conducted on May 26 in 8 municipal corporations, 76 municipal councils, and 21 municipal panchayats.

The voting will take place from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The counting of votes will be held on May 29, and the results will be declared on the same day. All preparations for the municipal elections have been completed.

Which 8 Municipal Corporations Will Go to Polls?

Mohali, Moga, Batala, Barnala, Abohar, Kapurthala, Pathankot, and Bathinda. In addition, there are 76 municipal councils and 21 municipal panchayats. In total, these bodies have 2,019 wards and 3,977 polling stations. The total number of voters across all three types of local bodies is 36,72,932, including 18,98,990 male voters, 17,73,716 female voters, and others. This number may increase further.

Nomination Schedule : According to the Election Commissioner, candidates can file their nominations from May 13 to May 16. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on May 18, and candidates may withdraw their nominations on May 19.

The Election Commissioner assured that the elections will be conducted with full transparency and peace, and police forces will be deployed to maintain law and order.
Campaign Expenditure Limits

Expenditure limits have also been set for candidates:

Municipal Corporation candidates: Up to ₹4 lakh
Municipal Council candidates:
Class-1: ₹3.60 lakh
Class-2: ₹2.30 lakh
Class-3: ₹2 lakh
Municipal Panchayat candidates: Up to ₹1.40 lakh
