TWO DUPED OF RS. 2.5 LAKH IN A DAY IN CYBER FRAUD CASES

Cyber fraudsters continued to target residents in Ferozepur, with two separate cases reported in a single day in which victims were allegedly duped of a total of Rs. 2.5 lakh using different methods. In one case, a man was threatened with a fake police case against his brother, while in the other, a victim was lured with fake Axis Bank credit card reward points.

In the first case, Kulbir Singh of Bazidpur village in Kulg arhi block approached the police after allegedly losing Rs. 1 lakh to a fraudster. According to his complaint, he received a call from an unknown number a few days ago. The caller allegedly posed as a policeman and claimed that Kulbir’s brother had been arrested after a video surfaced showing him carrying a weapon.

The caller allegedly demanded Rs. 5.5 lakh for his brother’s release. Believing the claim, Kulbir transferred Rs. 1 lakh and assured the caller that the remaining amount would be paid later. However, when he contacted his brother, Kulbir found that he was safe and that no such incident had occurred.

Following his complaint, police registered FIR No. 15 at the Cyber Crime Police Station under Sections 308, 319(2) and 318(4) of the BNS and Sections 66-C and 66-D of the Information Technology Act.

In the second case, Anil Kumar, a city resident, allegedly lost Rs. 1.5 lakh after being contacted by a person claiming to be an Axis Bank employee. The caller allegedly told him that reward points were available on his credit card and sent him a link to claim them.

After Anil Kumar entered his details through the link, Rs. 1.5 lakh was allegedly debited from his bank account. Police registered FIR No. 16 at the City Police Station under Sections 66-C and 66-D of the IT Act.

SSP Bhupinder Singh said both cases were under investigation and police teams were working to identify and trace the accused. He urged residents to remain cautious while dealing with unknown callers and advised them not to click on suspicious links or share OTPs, passwords, card details or other banking information with strangers.
