COPY OF US SENATE RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING SIKHS' CONTRIBUTIONS PRESENTED TO AKAL TAKAT JATHEDAR HARPREET SINGH

The resolution reads " the Sikh place of worship is known as Gurdwara Sahib, and there are more than 500 Gurdwaras across the United States; Whereas a hallmark of Sikh values and tradition is the community kitchen in every Gurdwara, known as the ‘‘Langar’’, where food is served, for free, to all visitors to the Gurdwara regardless of faith, religion, or background.

Sikh Political Action Committee founder and chairman Gurinder Singh Khalsa presented a copy of United States Senate Resolution 393 recognizing the historical, cultural and religious significance of the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak and the contributions and sacrifices made by Sikhs of the United States, to Jathedar Shri Akal Takat Sahib, Amritsar (India) ) Harpreet Singh.

U.S. Senators Todd Young (Republican-Indiana) and Ben Cardin (Democrat -Marryland) introduced the first Senate resolution honoring Sikh Americans on October 31, 2019. The resolution passed on November 14, 2019, works to further diversity and afford all Americans the opportunity to better understand, recognize, and appreciate the rich history and shared experiences of Sikhs.

Senator Todd Young in his letter to the Shri Akal Takhat Sahib Harpreet Singh, wrote " Dear Friend, Thank you for your steadfast service in your community and your willingness to serve the need of those that require it, I am especially most grateful for your interest in Sikh communities throughout the United States and for your continuted support of them. Your friend in service, Todd Young, United States Senator."

"Whereas Sikhs of the United States, such as Bhagat Singh Thind, served in the United States military during the World Wars; Whereas notable Sikhs of the United States include— Dalip Singh Saund, the first Asian-American Congressman, who was elected to office in 1957; Dr. Narinder Kapany, the inventor of fiber optics; Didar Singh Bains, the largest peach grower in the United States; and Gurinder Singh Khalsa, recipient of the prestigious Rosa Parks Trailblazer Award; Whereas Sikhs stand for— (1) equality of gender; (2) equality of race; and (3) freedom of faith; Whereas Hoosier Sikhs are 1 of the fastest growing business communities in Indiana...."
