Congress Legislature Party (CLP) deputy leader and Chabbewal MLA Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He resigned from the Congress and the assembly on Friday morning and became the second prominent Congress leader, after ex-Congress MLA from Bassi Pathana Gurpreet Singh GP, to join the AAP ahead of Lok Sabha elections.

Dr Chabbewal was inducted into the party by AAP state president Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann at his official residence in Chandigarh.

Dr Chabbewal had joined the Congress in 2009. He was first elected to the assembly from Chabbewal in 2017 and then went on to win the seat again in 2022. Then he was given the responsibility of the deputy leader of the CLP. Dr Chabbewal was also the Congress candidate from Hoshiarpur in the 2019 general elections. He was also the chairperson of Congress’s Scheduled Caste (SC) wing in Punjab and as a radiologist has many scanning centres in Hoshiarpur.

After his joining Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal addressed a press conference with senior AAP leader and Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer.

Harpal Cheema while welcoming Dr Raj Kumar said that today is a significant day. Today, a Congress leader, who is impressed by the working of the AAP government in Punjab, has left the Congress and joined the Aam Aadmi Party to contribute towards the development of our state. Cheema said that like, every Punjabi and honest politician, Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal is particularly impressed by the work we have done in the fields of education and health care. He said that the AAP government is on a mission to make Punjab Rangla again and leaders like Dr Raj Kumar can play an important role in our state's progress.

Cheema further said that their government has ended the Akali-BJP established mafia, drug and gangster rule in Punjab. Our objective is to provide employment to the objective is to provide employment to our youth and in just two years we gave 42,000 government jobs.

He added, being impressed by the policies of the AAP, Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal is joining our party today and I welcome him on behalf of the party, our national convenor Arvind Kejriwal ji, our state president S. Bhagwant Mann ji, on behalf of our party's working president Principal Budh Ram ji. He said that under the capable leadership of CM Mann and CM Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP family is expanding not just in Punjab but in every corner of the country. Entry of prominent leaders with their family, friends and cadre to AAP shows the popularity of the Aam Aadmi Party and substantiates that our government in Punjab is progressing on the right track.

He also assured Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal that he and all his associates will get deserved respect in the AAP. He said that Dr Chabbewal raises the important issues pertaining to Hoshiarpur and our state and together we will address all these issues more efficiently.

Cheema further said that the Aam Aadmi Party has launched its election campaign. We have launched a campaign in Delhi and Punjab and today we are sounding poll bugle in Gujarat. He said that today the whole nation wants to oust BJP from the power and I believe that the BJP's rule has come to an end, soon India will be BJP free.

Dr Raj Kumar ji is a prudent leader, he will strengthen our party not only in Hoshiarpur but in the whole Doaba as well: Minister Meet Hayer

Addressing the media, AAP cabinet minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer said that Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal is a prudent leader who always talks factually and sincerely. He added that Dr Chabbewal's presence will strengthen the party not only in Hoshiarpur but in Doaba and the whole Punjab as well. Earlier, former MLA of Bassi Pathana Gurpreet Singh GP joined the AAP and today Dr Raj Kumar ji is joining our party. He said that Bhagwant Mann's team is getting stronger day by day.

The AAP leader said that the Aam Aadmi party's policies and the working style of CM Bhagwant Mann-led government is impressing people and political leaders and that is why they are joining our party. People are joining AAP after getting influenced by its policies. He said that the works of previous governments in decades doesn't even come close to the work of the Mann government in just two years.

Hayer added that the Governments that are determined to work do not wait for elections. We are working for Punjab and Punjabis since day one of our government. We gave government jobs to 42,000 youths and regularised the temporary employees. The opposition has compulsion, they cannot openly applaud our work, but even they cannot deny the accomplishments of the AAP government in just two years. Even if the workers of Congress, Akali Dal and BJP in Punjab, are also getting 600 units of free electricity every month and their children are also getting government jobs. But gradually they are moving towards the Aam Aadmi Party.

Dr. Rajkumar Chabbewal has also joined the party considering the policies of the AAP and CM Bhagwant Mann welcomed him to the party. He added that many opposition leaders off the record agree with us that the AAP government in Punjab is doing good but they oppose us at every front as they get instructions to do so from above.

Addressing the media Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal said that his only motive for coming to politics was that he wants to work for the common people, develop the poor, provide education and health facilities to all. He was in the Congress Party for almost 12 years and did record breaking work in his assembly that is why he was elected again from Chabbewal in 2022 despite the wave of the AAP. Dr Chabbewal is popular leader of Doaba as Congress won Chabbewal after 45 years in 2017 while he was contesting for them.

Dr Raj Kumar thanked the AAP national convenor and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab President CM Bhagwant Mann for welcoming him into the AAP. The Aam Aadmi party follows the ideologies of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar and Shaheed-e-azam Bhagat Singh, he named it the biggest reason for joining the AAP.

He said that AAP is following the footsteps of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar as they are educating and uniting our people. I am so glad that education is a prioritised agenda in the AAP government and our school system is being improved and upgraded, said Chabbewal. He added that the health facilities are also very important and the Mann government is giving it deserved attention. He said that 600 units of free electricity is also commendable and how efficiently the government has implemented is also appreciable. Almost 90% of households in Punjab are getting zero electricity bills.

He further said, "I met Maan Sahib and I requested him that we have many kachcha houses in Hoshiarpur, they are about to collapse and he released funds of around Rs 5 crore for them. I am very impressed by his empathy for the poor." He said that it is his dream that every one has a roof over his head and he will continue to work as an honest soldier of the party. He said that he's impressed by the way the AAP government has been working for the last two years and said that CM Mann and FM Cheema have assured him that their government will work to reduce the debt on our state. He congratulated Harpal Cheema that his government is implementing the ideas of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar and bringing equality in our society.

He concluded that his aim is to work for the people. He is a doctor and has no greed for anything except for the betterment of the common people. "Today I am with those who are true. I'm dedicated to work for Punjab and its people. Whatever responsibilities are given by the party, I'll work honestly," said Dr Chabbewal.
