MAURITIAN MUSICAL GROUP ENTHRALS CITY MUSIC LOVERS

Patyatann, a Mauritian musical group today gave a scintillating performance at Strawberry Fields School, Sector 26 here. The 90-minute show brought alive five versatile musicians, Sarasvati Mallac, Anthony Bouic, Kan Chan Kin, Cledy François and Stephan Paul. 

The group, which was formed in 2012, came up with compositions in Sanskrit, French and Creole, as well as their Mauritian stories, sounds and rhythms with the public. Patyatann celebrates the Mauritian cultural diversity & promotes traditional instruments with an inventive world-fusion music. 

The group Patyatann had been invited by the French Institute in India and the Alliances Françaises of the Indian network, and is touring India and Nepal! Scheduled between March 12 and April 8, 2024, a series of concerts are being held in cities such as Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Indore, as well as Kathmandu, Nepal. This tour offers the band the exceptional opportunity to share their captivating music, reflecting the cultural richness and subtleties of Mauritius, with a new and varied audience. 

Patyatann experimented with different traditional instruments that can be found in Mauritius, including the erhu, the bobre, the sanza, the tabla, the didgeridoo and of course the ravanne. Their music was also characterized by its vocal harmonies or polyphonies, sung in different languages: Creole, French, English, Sanskrit or Bhojpuri.

Led by the Alliance Française de Chandigarh, this tour is a part of the Francophone Season in India which provides a focus on the French-speaking territories of the Indian Ocean, from March to October 2024 and thus highlights the close ties between India and the Indian Ocean, before the Francophonie Summit which will be held in October 2024 in Paris. 

Since its beginnings, the group has had the opportunity to represent Mauritius at the World Young Artists Event in England. In 2013, they became the first Mauritian group to perform at the Indian Ocean Music Market (IOMMA) in Reunion and won third place in the Indian Ocean Music Prize. The group was immediately acclaimed for its authenticity, its unique musical style and its freshness. 

In 2016, he released his first album, Sanpek, with success, paving the way for an enthusiastic tour of France and Switzerland in 2018. Patyatann's music, a fusion of influences from Mauritius with sounds from the Indian Ocean and even beyond, reflects the intercultural identity of the island. With songs performed in different languages and traditional Mauritian instruments, the combo creates an authentic and inspiring musical experience, transmitting universal values such as respect for nature and celebration of cultural diversity.
