Reacting over the media report that there is a plan of construction of a stadium in the green belt and peacock habitat at Longowal village in district Sangrur, Dr. Sandeep K Jain, Former Hony. Wildlife Warden and C. Member of the Animal Welfare Board of India has said that peacock is our national bird and enjoys a protected status under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Conservation Act as well as National Emblem Act. It is not only the habitat of peacocks but other species also.
Jain said that destruction of Habitat is also a violation of Wildlife Protection Act 1972. This has hundreds of trees and a water body, which are also playing a great role in the ecosystem. Wildlife and forests are very less in state due to development works. Destruction of large numbers of trees will have a very alarming effect on the ecosystem.
He has requested Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Maan to abandon the plan and arrange some alternatives for the stadium.
