Ranked 428th among 434 cities during Swachh Survekshan 2017 and 105th last year, Abohar has made a remarkable improvement and secured 78th position in Swachh Survekshan 2022 for which 382 civic bodies across the country participated in the competition.
Last year, the municipal corporation stood 5th in the state, this year the Abohar MC is the topper. In the category of cities with one to ten lakh population in Punjab, Abohar has got 2nd position.
Mayor Vimal Thatai gave credit to Sandeep Jakhar -led ‘Apna Abohar, Apni Abha’ campaign, besides the MC staff that had organised special cleanliness camps besides awareness drive against single-use plastic material every Saturday.
Abohar city has scored 4392.48 out of 6000 points in the survey. Abohar is already a defecation free city and has received a Three-star rating as a waste free city.
The MC has got 127 regular and 270 adhoc safai sewaks, the state govt had not allowed recruitment on permanent basis even when about 125 workers had retired on superannuation in the past ten years. 25 tippers move to cover each residential locality and market to collect dry and wet waste, the latter is used to prepare manure.
