A mother of three daughters was burned alive while sleeping in her room at her parents’ home in village Chak 3-ML, located on the Sri Ganganagar-Hanumangarh Road. Pooja (35)—who had taken refuge at her parents’ house for about two months to escape her husband’s abuse—was allegedly set ablaze by her husband, Sultan, after he sneaked into the house around 2:30 AM and doused her with petrol. Pooja succumbed to her severe burns at a hospital in Bikaner, while the accused husband fled the scene despite sustaining burns himself. Her father, Kalu Ram, who rushed to save his daughter, also suffered burns.
Based on a report filed by the deceased woman’s brother, the police initially registered a case of attempted murder against the husband; this was subsequently upgraded to a murder charge following her death. The bizarre incident occurred around 2:30 AM on Tuesday. Kishan Kumar (21), the brother of the deceased, reported that Pooja had been living at her parents’ home for the past two months because her husband, Sultan (40), used to beat her repeatedly.
Investigation indicated that Sultan arrived at his in-laws’ house on a motorcycle around 2:00 AM, carrying a 5-liter can filled with petrol. He barged into the house, scaling the boundary wall. Pooja was sleeping alone in a room; Sultan poured petrol and set her on fire. His own clothes caught fire; he ran back to the roof, discarded his burning shirt, and fled on his motorcycle. Hearing Pooja’s screams, her father Kalu Ram and other family members rushed to the room. Upon seeing her engulfed in flames, they attempted to save her.
During the incident, one of Kalu Ram’s legs was severely scorched. Pooja was immediately rushed to the district hospital Sriganganagar. Due to suffering 80 percent burns, she was referred to PBM Hospital in Bikaner after receiving first aid; she passed away while undergoing treatment there.
