Another smuggling network connecting Punjab and Pakistan has been busted in the Hindumalkot area in Sriganganagar. The police have arrested a young man from Guruharsahai.
According to police sources, on the night of September 23–24, farmers working in Mandeep Singh’s field at Chak 5-C heard the sound of a packet dropping. They immediately informed the police. As it would take time for the police to reach the scene, the informant and his associates were asked to keep an eye on and pursue the individuals coming to collect the suspicious packet. The farmer, accompanied by his associates, chased the suspects who had picked up the packet dropped by a drone. Realizing they were being pursued, the suspects abandoned the packet and fled towards the nearby railway tracks, disappearing from sight.
Later, the police recovered a packet wrapped in yellow plastic tape; contain a total of 1.530 Kg of heroin. The bag bore the mark ‘999’ and some Urdu script. The packet was also fitted with an illuminating sticker and a ring to make it easily identifiable in the dark.
Police believed that the drone had made only one sortie that night. Among the individuals who fled when chased by the farmers, 21-year-old Malkiat Singh (alias Chhindi)—a resident of village Megharai Uttar in Guruharsahai—has been arrested. Two or three other individuals from Punjab had accompanied Malkiat Singh that night to collect the heroin consignment, but they fled.
The police are now searching for two individuals named Raman and Jassi.
