FIRING AT HOUSE IN BARNALA SPARKS PANIC, ARMED ASSAILANTS FLEE LEAVING SCOOTER BEHIND

 Naresh Kumar/Barnala

Panic gripped the Khuddi Road area of Barnala on Monday evening when five to six armed youths allegedly opened fire at a house following an old enmity, police said.

The incident took place around 6 pm when the assailants, travelling in a car and a scooter, reached the house of Akashdeep and allegedly started firing indiscriminately. The firing triggered panic in the locality, with residents initially taking shelter inside their houses.

According to the victim, the attackers also forcibly entered the house and assaulted him before fleeing the spot. As local residents started gathering and attempted to surround the assailants, they fled in their car, leaving the scooter behind at the spot. Angry people subsequently set the abandoned scooter on fire, the victim said.

Akashdeep told police that he had an old dispute with the alleged attackers and that they had earlier clashed with him on Garcha Road. He alleged that the accused carried out the attack as part of the ongoing rivalry.
The assailants allegedly fired several rounds and damaged property before fleeing the spot while brandishing weapons, he said.

SHO Lakhvir Singh reached the spot along with a police team soon after receiving information about the incident. Police examined the scene and collected empty cartridges and other evidence.
Police said no loss of life was reported in the firing. Statements of the victim and other persons were being recorded, and a case was being registered under relevant sections of law. Raids were being conducted to arrest the accused.
Further investigation is under way
