Parvinder Singh, alias “Jhota”—an anti-drug activist known for exposing the illegal sale of addictive medicines at medical stores—was shot dead at a medicine shop in Mansa.
Condemning the incident, MLA Sandeep Jakhar said that the broad-daylight shooting of Parvinder Singh “Jhota” is deeply concerning. A video of the incident has also surfaced, raising serious questions about the state’s current situation. The manner in which “Jhota” was killed makes it evident that the fear of the law is diminishing among criminals.
He remarked that the government, which makes tall claims about its anti-drug campaigns and actions against gangsters, needs to explain just how safe the common man is in the state. If such incidents occur openly, the gap between the Punjab government’s claims and the ground reality becomes apparent. While the Aam Aadmi Party government heavily publicized campaigns like “Yudh Nashian Virudh” and crackdowns on gangsters, the situation on the ground remains alarming. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP National Convener Arvind Kejariwal owe an answer to the people of Punjab.
He questioned where the government’s accountability lies amidst rising crime in Punjab. Several incidents involving the shootouts targeting Punjab Police had shaken the state in recent months; the fact that even the safety of police personnel is in question is a matter of grave concern.
Sandeep Jakhar added that Abohar, too, has not been spared from the deteriorating law-and-order situation. There is an urgent need to strengthen security arrangements in the city, curb the drug trade. He demanded that the Punjab government take concrete steps to effectively curb drug trafficking, and take strict action against criminals. “People of Punjab want security, accountability, and better governance, not publicity stunts”
