The sit-in protest by the family members of the deceased, along with representatives from the Valmiki community and various other organizations, continued for the second consecutive day outside the mortuary of the Civil Hospital.
The protest, which sought justice for the death of Sant Nagar resident Ajay Kumar——saw demonstrators raising slogans against the Punjab government and the police administration. They expressed a complete lack of faith in the Punjab Police’s investigation and demanded that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure an impartial disclosure of all facts surrounding the incident.
Municipal Corporation senior Deputy Mayor Dharamvir Malkat said that 25 days have passed since the incident, yet no appropriate action has been taken against those alleged to be involved. The family had refused to allow a post-mortem.
MLA Sandeep Jakhar said, “it is deeply unfortunate that a family, already grieving the loss of their son, is forced to stage a sit-in protest to seek justice. The family’s loss of confidence in the police and government investigation is a matter of serious concern; the government should address the family’s demand for a CBI inquiry”.
On September 27, Ajay Kumar was shot outside the Valmiki Mandir Dharamshala in Sant Nagar. He had been undergoing treatment for his critical injuries in Ludhiana, where he passed away on Monday evening. Ajay was married and is survived by two children.
Sarpanch Union former president Sushil Siyag, senior BJP leader Dhanpat Siyag, BJP Mandal president Ramesh Gandhi, Jagjit Singh, and others also addressed the gathering demanding arrest of the accused.
