In a dramatic development in the murder case of Shri Kumar Medical Hall cashier Janki Das, two of the three arrested shooters were injured after allegedly attempting to escape from police custody while being transported from Jammu to Chandigarh.
Chandigarh Police had secured the transit remand of the three accused arrested in Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the sensational daylight killing of ShJanki Das at Shri Kumar Medical Hall in Sector 11, Chandigarh. While the police team was bringing the accused back to Chandigarh, they allegedly tried to flee from custody during the journey.
Police sources said that officers initially attempted to stop the accused, but when they continued their escape attempt, the police opened fire. During the action, two accused, identified as Aryan and Sunny Mehra, sustained bullet injuries in their legs. The third accused was also overpowered and taken into custody.
The injured accused were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Doctors attending to them stated that both are currently in stable condition.
The case pertains to the shocking and sensational murder of Janki Das, a cashier at Shri Kumar Medical Hall in Sector 11, Chandigarh. He was shot dead in broad daylight, triggering widespread concern and a massive police investigation. Following the incident, Chandigarh Police conducted raids across several states.
During the course of the investigation, a Jammu and Kashmir connection emerged, prompting police teams to launch operations in the Union Territory. As a result, Aryan, Sunny Mehra, and another suspect were arrested approximately five days after the murder.
The incident has also drawn political attention. Member of Parliament Manish Tewari expressed deep sorrow over the killing of Janki Das and urged Chandigarh Police to ensure strict action against all those involved in the crime.
Meanwhile Police official release said, immediately after the incident, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising officers from the Crime Branch, Operations Cell, District
Crime Cell and Police Station 11 was constituted. The SIT carried out an extensive investigation involving CCTV analysis, technical surveillance,intelligence gathering and coordinated raids across Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir.During the investigation, it emerged that the accused had arrived in Chandigarh on a stolen motorcycle bearing a Punjab registration number. After committing the crime, subsequently fled to Delhi via bus from sector 43 and thereafter Jammu & Kashmir via train. Detailed scrutiny of CCTV footage, hotel records and technical evidence enabled investigators to identify the accused persons.
The accused have been identified as Sunny Mehra, son of Kuldeep Raj, resident of Samba District, Jammu & Kashmir aged 22 yrs, Aryan Sharma, son of Amarjeet Sharma, resident of Sarhoti, Rajouri, District, Jammu & Kashmir aged 19 yrs. and Amit Kumar, resident of Samba District, Jammu & Kashmir.Investigation has revealed that Sunny Mehra was the principal shooter while Aryan Sharma was riding the motorcycle used in the commission of the offence. The role of Amit Kumar is also under investigation.
Acting upon credible intelligence and evidence collected during the investigation, Chandigarh Police teams conducted raids at multiple locations in Punjab, Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir. Consequently, accused Sunny Mehra and Aryan Sharma were formally arrested in Jammu & Kashmir
on 17.06.2026 at about 7:30 PM and the arrest was duly intimated to the concerned local police station. While the accused were being brought to Chandigarh for further
legal proceedings on 18.06.2026, between approximately 4:30 AM and 5:00 AM, the police vehicle met with an accident behind Punjab University while entering Chandigarh from the Punjab side. As a result of the impact, some police personnel sustained injuries and a service weapon carried by a police official fell to the ground.
Taking advantage of the situation, accused Sunny Mehra attempted to flee and picked up the service weapon. Despite repeated warnings by the police party, he opened fire upon the police personnel. The accused fired two rounds, which struck the police vehicle behind which police personnel had taken cover. The police party initially fired a warning shot;however, when the accused continued his attempt to escape and pose a threat to the police party, police personnel retaliated in self-defence and to prevent the escape of the accused. During the incident, four rounds were fired by the police party.During the exchange of fire, accused Sunny Mehra sustained two gunshot injuries in his left leg and accused Aryan Sharma sustained one gunshot injury in his right leg. The driver of the vehicle also sustained injuries.
All injured persons were immediately shifted to Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector-16, Chandigarh, with the assistance of ERSS-112 and are receiving medical treatment. The investigation is continuing. Efforts are underway to apprehend the third accused, Amit Kumar, and to establish the complete conspiracy behind the crime, including possible links with organised criminal networks and extortion activities.
Separate legal proceedings regarding the transit incident are being undertaken as per law. Investigation into the larger conspiracy and all connected aspects of the case is continuing.
