CII MOURNS THE UNTIMELY DEMISE OF SUNJAY KAPUR

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) deeply mourns the sudden and untimely demise of Mr Sunjay Kapur, Chairman, Sona Comstar. He was engaged with CII on many crucial issues and led several councils and committees on key areas such as manufacturing, sustainability, and international trade. He was currently serving as Chairman of CII Northern Region and focused on enhancing Ease of Doing business, regional competitiveness, technology adoption, inclusivity and sustainability initiatives in the region. He had held leadership roles, including Co-Chairman of the CII Smart Manufacturing Council and the Council on Making Manufacturing Future Ready. He also chaired the CII Europe Committee (2023–24), working to enhance trade and business collaborations between India and Europe and the CII Haryana State Council (2020-21). A passionate advocate for sustainability, he was a member of the Advisory Board of the CII Water Institute, where he contributed to water conservation and resource efficiency initiatives.

A distinguished young industry leader with over two decades of industry experience, Mr Kapur played a vital role in shaping India’s automotive and manufacturing policies and ecosystem. Mr Rajiv Memani, President, CII and Chairman and CEO, EY India, said, “Deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely and sudden passing of Sunjay Kapur, Chairman of CII Northern Region and Chairman of Soma Comstar. His demise is a profound loss to the Indian Industry and CII. He was a forward-looking leader with a strong vision for India’s global leadership in manufacturing and mobility. He brought remarkable ideas, energy, and a unique global outlook to his many roles at CII, always championing innovation, manufacturing excellence, and sustainability. His passing leaves a void that is hard to put into words. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues. His contributions will continue to guide and inspire many young entrepreneurs.”

Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII, said, “Mr Sunjay Kapur was an extraordinary leader who combined sharp business acumen with a deep sense of responsibility toward society and sustainability. He was actively involved in CII's policy work, encompassing areas such as smart manufacturing, MSME development, skill-building, and water stewardship. His insights and global perspective were invaluable, and his constant support to CII was always anchored in purpose. His leadership of the Europe Committee was instrumental in expanding India’s business ties with the region. Sunjay’s dynamism, humility, and commitment to building a better future will always remain with us. We, at CII, deeply mourn his passing and stand with his family, friends, and colleagues in this moment of grief.”

Under the able stewardship of Mr Kapur, Sona Comstar emerged as a global force in automotive systems and mobility. His visionary leadership continues to inspire industry peers and policymakers alike. His contributions to Indian industry, his commitment to nation-building, and his personal engagement with people and ideas have left a lasting legacy.
