Setting the context, Mr Vivek Gupta, Vice Chairman, CII Chandigarh UT & Director, NEC Packaging Ltd said that despite increasing employment and leadership opportunities, women remain vastly under-represented in the global economy, particularly in its top tiers. Women’s under-representation in emerging roles and the rise of informal employment threaten to exacerbate this in the future. To ensure women’s full economic opportunities at every level, we will need to set ambitious and comprehensive goals for the next 25 years.
“According to estimates, at 17% of GDP, the economic contribution of Indian women is less than half the global average, India could boost its growth by 1.5% to 9% per year if around 50% of women could join the workforce”, he added.
Sharing her thoughts here today, Ms Mallika Sarabhai, Indian classical dancer, choreographer, actress, writer, and social activist said, “India is unique only because of its diversity, be it linguistic, artistic, culinary, architectural, expressions or forms of worship. Yet we are marching towards homogenization of every kind. We see our diversities and pluralities as backwardness. In the process, we are destroying the soul of our nation. The theme for this year – Diversity Beyond Gender – is of utmost importance.“
Coinciding with the Session, CII Indian Women Network, Chandigarh Tricity Chapter organised its Annual Session for 2021-2022. Ms Nagina Bains, Director, Testler was elected as its Chairwoman for the year 2022-23.
Sharing her vision for the coming year, Ms Bains shared, “I intend to dedicate this year at IWN to be a catalyst in that change and whatever we as a team can do and I believe we can. The CII mandate of policy and advocacy, learning and wellbeing, health and membership development will all be focused with the thematic semblance of this idea, especially health with a special focus on mental health, which I think is most imperative especially for the youth who represent the ethos of tomorrow. We shall also focus on gender inclusivity, an off shoot of diversity by optimizing the talent pool by including personnel from multiple generations which defines generational diversity, people with disability and groups of LGBT communities, and lastly, also women in leadership roles which going by the current trend is something we still don’t see in very high numbers.”
Ms Bains has Bachelor’s with Honors in Psychology, a postgraduate diploma in Mass Communication and a program in General Management with Cornell University, USA beside a Masters in Sociology. Her freelance writing experience with leading newspapers of the country has enriched her understanding of politics, lifestyle and education. She has an enriching corporate experience having worked with some of the top firms in India including DLF, IHCL and also a stint with the UNWTO .
Ms Anupam Jain, Past Chairwoman, CII IWN Chandigarh Tricity Chapter & Director MMC Computers added “ The advancement of technology and advent of social media has given women a new form of expression to push boundaries and rewrite rules. Women empowerment can be seen with the rise in women participation in diverse fields. Gender diversity can bring great value to an organization as now women are not just technically and logically strong but are also more ambitious and passionate about work.”
