A recently constructed water storage tank in Pattisadiq village, about 22km from here, got damaged partially as soon as water was poured into it, water leaked through the sidewall and floor bed was also not found perfect. The villagers have raised questions on the quality of material used as well as mason work that was monitored by the Gram Panchayat and Panchayati Raj Department, they accused the officials of negligence
The villagers said that a water tank built about a decade back was still in good condition and water is being supplied from the same. But due to the lack of cleanliness and other maintenance work, water gets contaminated, wild shrubs around the tank in the water works were not removed for a long time. On the other side the new tank developed cracks in the first trial. People said that it should be investigated so that people's money is not wasted. It appeared visibly that the newly built tank could not withstand the pressure of even a little water, what would have happened if it was filled completely with water, villagers asked.
BDPO Gagandeep Kaur said that the issue has come to her notice, the supervising official has been asked to investigate and submit the report soon, action will be taken after the report is received, she added.
Earlier on March 17, the wheat crop on hundreds of acres was submerged as a breach developed in the recently reconstructed Ramsara Minor (sub canal) that was inaugurated with much fanfare by a cabinet minister in February. A part of the sub-canal was constructed by the previous government. It was completed at a cost of Rs 9.5 crore in March.
AAP leaders had come down heavily on Abohar MLA Sandeep Jakhar, who inspected the canal twice and asked farmers to be vigilant about the quality of construction material used in its reconstruction. The sub canal could not bear the wind pressure and the flow of water, which led to heavy soil erosion from its bank. The officials got the same repaired but were evasive on the action taken against the erring contractor.
