A good example of administration and public participation in flood prevention work has surfaced in Fazilka district. People have saved more than 3000 acres of crops by building a 2200-meter-long security barrier near the barbed wire on the Indo-Pak border under the supervision of the BSF in collaboration with the district administration.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Senu Duggal inspected the bundh on Sunday and praised the courage of the people.
(SUBHEAD)The creek of Sutlej crosses the international border and comes to the Indian side. It once goes to the Pakistan side near the village Nawan Maujam and returns to India near Muhar Jamsher and finally goes to Pakistan.
This creek is on the Pakistan side near Sikandar village but its water flows to the Indian side. In the same area, this 2200-meter-long bundh has been constructed near the barbed wire.
The administration provided JCB and diesel while the villagersused tractor trolleys to create the bundh.
MLA Narinder Pal Singh Savana said that 5 to 6 feet of water was flowing on the other side of this embankment. If thebundh was not created, then water would have wreaked havoc around Nawan Maujam, but this calamity has been averted.
