05 Dec is celebrated by 14 Gorkha Training Centre Subathu, as Paramveer Chakra Day in commemoration of the ultimate sacrifice by Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria, PVC (Posthumous) on 05 Dec 1961, who in a gallant act along with his team neutralised 40 rebels to open a road in Congo on orders of United Nations. He remains the only PVC awarded on a UN Mission till date.
This year the PVC day was celebrated by laying of wreath at war memorial at Sabathu by Lt Gen AK Singh, AVSM, GOC-in-C, Southern Command and President Gorkha Bde followed by his interaction with all ranks. In his address he exhorted all ranks to live up to the highest standards and traditions of Gorkhas and the Indian Army.
In addition, in a separate function held by Cantonment Board, a road “Paramveer Marg” was inaugurated in remembrance of Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria, PVC by Naik Gopal Singh Thapa (Retd), 3/1 Gorkha Rifles, a member of the Gallant Force commanded by Capt GS Salaria, PVC (Posthumous) during the1961 operation.
