Punjab Governor & Administrator, Chandigarh, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria on Tuesday distributed scholarships worth Rs. 10.18 crore to 2,394 sportspersons under the new sports policy of Chandigarh Administration. This grand event was organized at Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-42, Chandigarh, where Shri Kataria encouraged the sportspersons and said that sports not only provides physical and mental strength, but is also the most important medium to develop discipline, teamwork and leadership skills in life.

While addressing the players, Administrator Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria said that promoting sports is the priority of the administration and keeping this objective in mind, the new sports policy of Chandigarh has been implemented. Under this policy, the amount of scholarship for players in various categories has been increased.

In the Under-23 category, the gold medalist will get a scholarship of ₹ 60,000, the silver medalist will get ₹ 54,000 and the bronze medalist will get ₹ 48,000. Similarly, in the Under-19 category, the gold medalist will be provided assistance of ₹ 48,000, the silver medalist will get ₹ 42,000 and the bronze medalist will get ₹ 36,000. At the same time, in the Under-14 category, scholarships of ₹ 36,000 have been fixed for gold medal, ₹ 30,000 for silver medal and ₹ 24,000 for bronze medal.

(SUBHEAD)Appreciating the importance being given to sports under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Administrator said that the budget of Khelo India Programme has been increased three times, thereby strengthening the sports infrastructure across the country. This will provide more resources to the budding sportspersons and enable them to bring laurels to the country at the international level. Describing this initiative as a historic step for the sports world, he said that this will give India’s sporting talent a golden opportunity to shine on the global stage.

Punjab Governor & Administrator Chandigarh Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, while highlighting the achievements of the sportspersons of Chandigarh, said that the city has been the land of Olympic Gold Medalist Abhinav Bindra, Cricket Legend Kapil Dev, and Hockey greats. He expressed confidence that such steps taken by the Chandigarh Administration will give birth to more sporting talent in the future.

During the event, the Governor distributed cheques to the sports scholarship recipients and wished them a bright future. Motivating the players, he said, “Every player has immense potential. If you move forward with discipline, hard work and right guidance, then no power in the world can stop you from succeeding.”

Chief Secretary, Chandigarh Shri Rajiv Verma was also present in this program. He was accompanied by Principal Secretary to the Governor Shri Vivek Pratap Singh, Sports Secretary Smt. Prerna Puri, Sports Director Shri Sorabh Kumar Arora and other senior officers of the Sports Department.
