The historic Harike Pattan on Sunday became the starting point of a statewide awareness march launched by Misal Satluj and several religious, social and panthic organisations in memory of human rights activist Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra. Named “Challenge the Darkness”, the campaign will travel across Punjab with the stated aim of promoting awareness about human rights, justice and Punjab’s history among the younger generation.
The programme commenced with the recitation of the Mool Mantar and an Ardas led by Baba Balkar Singh. Participants paid floral tributes to Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra and remembered his contribution towards the cause of human rights.
Addressing the gathering, Misal Satluj president Ajepal Singh Brar announced that the organisation would establish a memorial dedicated to Khalra. He said the memorial would serve as a platform to educate future generations about Punjab’s historical journey, democratic values and the importance of safeguarding human rights.
Brar said Khalra’s life represented courage and an unwavering commitment to truth. He added that the younger generation should draw inspiration from his struggle for justice and public accountability.
Speaking on the occasion, Misal Satluj general secretary Davinder Singh Sekhon said the march would pass through various districts of Punjab over the coming weeks. He said a series of public meetings, interactions and awareness programmes would be organised during the campaign to encourage discussion on constitutional values, social responsibility and citizens’ rights.
Several speakers recalled Khalra’s contribution and said his legacy continues to inspire those working for justice and human dignity. They stressed the need to preserve such memories so that future generations remain aware of the sacrifices made in defence of democratic principles.
Among those present were Dr Mukhtiar Singh, Gurcharan Singh Bhullar, Hira Singh Gurdittiwala, Roman Brar, Baba Satnam Singh Vallian, Avtar Singh Mahima, Jasbir Singh Bhullar, Harjinder Singh, Lakhbir Singh Muhlam, Harchand Singh Poola, Sarabjit Singh Bhawra and Kulvir Singh Nadda.
The organisers said the campaign would continue across the state with the objective of engaging youth and creating awareness on issues related to justice, equality and human rights.
