At Dr. S.S. Tantia Medical College Hospital and Research Center (Jan Seva Hospital), Sriganganagar, a pregnant woman suffering from an extremely rare condition—viral encephalitis—was successfully treated through the collaborative efforts of the medical team.

She had been brought to the emergency department during her 37th week of pregnancy, complaining of high fever and recurrent seizures. She had no history of pre-eclampsia. Her condition was further complicated by an altered sensorium.

Dr. Divya Soin, HoD, Department of Medicine, said that symptoms of this disease had been reported in only a few pregnant women worldwide to date. Led by Dr. Aman Thatai and Dr. Vasu Sharma, the medicine team made a provisional diagnosis of encephalitis following a detailed history and clinical examination. The patient was transferred to the Medical ICU for intensive monitoring and management.

The newborn was immediately taken under the care of the Paediatrics/Neonatology team, while the mother continued to receive intensive care. With the assistance of the Emergency Medicine Department, a CSF analysis was conducted and sent for BioFire testing, confirming viral encephalitis; additionally, a CEMRI of the brain was performed in consultation with the Radiology Department, facilitating the identification of the disease and guiding the subsequent treatment.

Thanks to the collective efforts of the entire team, both mother and child showed day-by-day improvement. After 14 days of treatment, the healthy mother was discharged from the hospital and returned home happily, cradling her healthy newborn. Gynaecologist Dr. Nidhi Khurana, Anaesthesiologist Dr. Devyani, Neurophysician Dr. Abhimanyu Kalra, Emergency Medicine specialist Dr. Naveen Jain, Chest Physician Dr. Sanjay Solanki, Paediatricians/Neonatologists Dr. Inderdeep, Dr. Raja Ram, and Dr. Mudita, Physiotherapist Droupadi, and MICU staff members Arvind (In-charge), Sukhwant, Imran, Amandeep, Sonika, Veerpal, and Rajdeep also played pivotal roles in the patient’s treatment.

The Vice Chairperson of Tantia University, Dr. Mohit Tantia, says that their effort is to ensure that every modern medical facility available in metropolitan cities is also ensured here
