The Punjab Government has declared a public holiday across the state on Monday, September 28, 2026, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh.
According to a notification issued by the Department of General Administration (Holidays Branch), all government offices, departments, boards, corporations, public sector undertakings, educational institutions and schools functioning under the Punjab Government will remain closed on the occasion.
The notification, issued under order of the Governor of Punjab, stated that the holiday has been announced to honour the supreme sacrifice and contribution of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, one of India’s greatest freedom fighters and national martyrs. Bhagat Singh was born on September 28, 1907, and remains an enduring symbol of patriotism and sacrifice.
The government has directed all Administrative Secretaries, Divisional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and Heads of Departments to ensure compliance with the order. Directors of School Education and Higher Education have also been informed regarding the closure of educational institutions. However, essential services will continue to function as per established norms. The holiday will be applicable across Punjab in all government offices and government-recognised educational institutions.
