A team of 25 innovative engineering students of YMCA University of Science and Technology, Faridabad who have designed and developed an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV), won first prize in National level completion BAJA SAE 2017 held at Indore (Madhya Pradesh). The team won the cash prize amounting to Rs. one lakh 20 thousand in the category of innovation and cost evaluation.
A team of 25 innovative engineering students of YMCA University of Science and Technology, Faridabad who have designed and developed an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV), won first prize in National level completion BAJA SAE 2017 held at Indore (Madhya Pradesh). The team won the cash prize amounting to Rs. one lakh 20 thousand in the category of innovation and cost evaluation. The Vice Chancellor Prof. Dinesh Kumar congratulated the team members for their achievement and lauded the efforts put in by the faculty, students and workshop staff especially the staff associated with the project. He said that competitions of such kind are huge opportunities for budding automotive and motorsport engineers to compete and learn about automotive engineering, gain practical and industry-standard experience. Getting involved with such kind of projects is a great way to learn the real engineering skills. To design and actually build such vehicle is an experience which students cannot get in a classroom, he added.
Dr. M.L. Aggarwal, Chairman, Mechanical Engineering and Dr. S.K. Sharma, Registrar of the University have also conveyed best wishes to the team.
While describing the specification of vehicle Dr. Navdeep Malhotra and Dr. Vasdev Malhotra of Mechanical Engineering, who guided the students in the project, said that the vehicle is a unique and award winning Innovation by the students which is very light, compact, agile, with better handling facilities. It has been designed according to competition requirements, rules and ergonomics. The students replaced market designed gearbox by their self designed and fabricated gearbox. Also, they made some changes in suspension design. To achieve better stability and manoeuvrability, they have introduced variable steering ratio in accordance with various driving conditions. The vehicle can be used in rescue missions and disaster Management.
The team put around nine month efforts to design the vehicle and its manufacturing cost was over Rs 5.09 lakh. The funds were raised from the university's student activity fund, financial support provided by YMCA alumni Mr. Amit Sharma, Daikin India, Mr. Sanjeev Aggarwal, AS Systems, Mr. Ravinder Wadhwa, Prima Technology, Mr. Susheel Arora, Delta Protech, Mr. Amrish Bhatiya, AD Hydro Pneumch Engineers and Mr. Anil Madan, Transcend Contracts. The vehicle was sponsored by RVM CAD.
Sahil Dembla, captain of the team said that the competition was very challenging as 413 engineering college teams competed for it. Out of the total, 150 teams were shortlisted and allowed to fabricate the designed ATV in which Mechnext Racing, the team of YMCA University, won 1st prize in innovation in steering and cost evaluation.
Apart from this, the YMCA University team also participates in various other events of SAE like Supra, effi-cycle and AWIM (A World in Motion). It is pertinent to mention BAJA SAE is an all-terrain vehicle competition jointly initiated by the Society of Automotive Engineers India (SAEINDIA), the Automotive Research Institute of India (ARAI) and automotive companies. BAJA emphasizes on all the aspects of engineering including design, research, fabricating, testing and marketing. A series of dynamic and Static events evaluate the performance of the vehicle and the team. The goal in Baja SAE racing is to design, build and race off-road vehicles that can withstand the harshest elements of rough terrain.
