LOP visits family of farmer who ends his life, announces monetary help of 1 Lakh to family

The leader of opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Friday visited the grieved family of farmer Davinder Singh of village Chanarthal in district Fatehgarh Sahib who committed suicide by hanging himself a day before. The farmer was allegedly being harassed by the commission agent for repaying the debt. The brother and father of the farmer had too committed suicide because of debt. Khaira demanded a strict action against the agents who are responsible for the death of farmer.

Addressing the media after consoling the grieved family, Khaira said that the congress Government in state has failed drastically on all the fronts. He said that the drama of loan waver enacted by Congress government has further confused the famers whether to pay the loans or not.

The government has not issued any notification or guidelines to the banks to give relief to the farmers and it is further creating more confusion. The government has ditched the farmers that has resulted in more than 100 suicides in 4 months of formation of Congress government.

Expressing shock over the death of farmer Davinder Singh, Khaira said that it is unfortunate that the agents have sold the whole land of the farmer who had taken loan of just Rs. 4 Lakh. Even after taking Rs. 60 Lakhs from the farmer, the agents were not satisfied and were harassing the family.

Khaira appealed to the NRI Punjabis to come forward and help the families of Farmers who have committed suicides because of farm debt. He praised the efforts of NRI Rashpal Singh for financially helping the family of farmer Davinder Singh. The leader said that it is the duty of all the Punjabis residing in different countries of the world to offer helping hand to their brothers in their hard times.

The LOP said the NRIs for time being must refrain from spending their hard earned money on organizing cultural events and other things but to donate that money to the families of farmers. He said that the NRIs must form social help groups and adopt the farmers who are under debt.

The LOP demanded for a 4 day special session of Vidhan Sabha to discuss the problems being faced by the farmers of the state. He emphasized that the government must issue clear guidelines to the Banks, co-operative societies and arthiyas so they should stop harassing the farmers. Khaira also criticized Congress government for turning a blind eye to the problems of farmers.
