Chandigarh Press Club to join all India protest against the killing and threats to journalists on Gandhi Jayanti at 1 PM in the front law of Chandigarh Press Club, situated in Sector 27 here.

The protest is organised under the aegis of Federation of Press Clubs of India.A 'SOLIDARITY DAY' is being observed nationwide by press clubs across the country on October 2.

Mr. Jaswant Singh Rana President of the Chandigarh Press club, said, Gauri Lankesh, an independent publisher and Editor of a Kannada publication, was killed in cold blood on September 5, in her house. Till today the police have not been able to make any arrests. In Tripura, on September 21, a television reporter Shantanu Bhowmick was brutally killed in broad daylight while covering a protest rally.

A day later K J Singh, a senior journalist, who was also member of the Chandigarh Press Club, was murdered at his home along with his mother in Mohali, Punjab.

These are three gruesome murders in just one month. In the last one month alone nearly 100 journalists have been threatened for expressing free opinion. Last week some of the Chandigarh-based reporters of electronic channels and newspapers received threat letters.

Many journalists in the country have been getting regular death threats. Trolling on social media has become a norm. The danger to freedom of press appears real. To protest against the killings and threats, the Press Clubs of the country have decided to discuss a way forward.

Meanwhile Chandigarh Journalists Association (CJA) , affiliated with National Journalists Union-I, will also join the protest. Mr. Avtar Singh President of the Association said, all the journalists members will gather at Chandigarh Press Club to join the nationwide protest.
