Padamshree Dr Amrit Tewari, the mother of senior Congress leader and former union minister Manish Tewari, passed away late last night in Chandigarh. She was 80. She was not keeping well for sometime. She was recently operated in the PGI, Chandigrah. The cremation will take place tomorrow, Monday (January 15) in Sector 25 crematorium, Chandigrah at 1 pm.Dr Tewari is survived by her son Manish Tewari and daughter, Ms Puneet.

She was married to Prof Vishwanath Tewari, a Rajya Sabha MP, who was assassinated by the militants in 1984.Dr Tewari was an ex-Dean of the PGI and had also served as the Chairperson of the Indian Dental Council. She also served as a Councillor in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.She was also awarded Padam Shri for her outstanding service in the field of medicine. Meanwhile Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday expressed grief over the demise of Dr. Amrit Tewari, the mother of senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Manish Tewari. 

In a condolence message, the Chief Minister recalled the outstanding services rendered by Padma Shri recipient Dr. Amrit Tewari in the field of dentistry & orthodontics at national as well as international level, besides serving at PGIMER, Chandigarh, in various administrative capacities including as its Dean. She was a multi-faceted personality, with the qualities of the head and heart, who worked tirelessly to uplift the disadvantaged sections of the society in and around Chandigarh, of which she was the member of its Municipal Corporation. 

Sharing heartfelt condolences with the bereaved family, friends and relatives, the Chief Minister prayed to the Almighty to give courage to bear this irreparable loss in the hour of crisis and grant eternal peace to the departed soul.
