WUSHU MEDALLIST NITIKA GETS WARM WELCOME

Medallist Nitika Bansal was given a warm welcome as she alighted from superfast train at Sriganganagar station.

In an impressive and masterful performance at the 10th Junior Asian Wushu Championships held in Seri Begawan, Brunei, Nitika had defeated Indonesian contestant in an impressive and masterful performance to win bronze medal. Wushu is the Chinese term for "martial arts" ("Wu" = military or martial, "Shu" = art). It has a long history in reference to Chinese martial arts. It was developed in 1949 in an effort to standardize the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts, yet attempts to structure the various decentralized martial arts traditions date back earlier, when the Central Guoshu Institute was established at Nanking in 1928.

Indian Wushu team won ten medals- 3 silver and 7 bronze at the Championships. This edition of the biennial event attracted around 265 junior athletes of 18 teams from 16 countries and regions.

Rajasthan Wushu Association national medallist players were recently given Rs 11 lakh prize money by the Rajasthan Sports Council, Nikita got Rs 1.25 lakh.

Such recognitions may help promote Wushu; youth in Abohar were also seeking more information about the martial art now and expect Punjab govt to promote it.
