CBI COURT SENTENCES 3 SENIOR ENGINEERS OF SOUTHERN RAILWAY, A CONTRACTOR FOR CAUSING LOSS OF RS.18.5 LAKH TO RAILWAY

The Special Judge-II, CBI Cases, Ernakulam (Kerala) has convicted three Senior Engineers of Southern Railway, Kannur (Kerala) & one contractor and sentenced Shri S.K. Bansal, the then Dy. Chief Engineer & Shri S.K. Agarwal, the then Executive Engineer, both to undergo one year Simple Imprisonment with fine of Rs.7 lakh each; Shri C.K. Varghese, the then Executive Engineer to undergo one year Simple Imprisonment with fine of Rs.3 lakh and a private person Shri Sajeev Mathew, (Contractor) to undergo one year Simple Imprisonment with fine of Rs.14 lakh.

CBI had registered the case on the allegations that the accused entered into a criminal conspiracy to cheat Southern Railway in the construction of vertical sand piles. In pursuance of the said conspiracy, the accused prepared false & forged documents; processed the same and passed the inflated bills of said private person (contractor). An alleged loss to the tune of Rs.18.5 lakh was caused to Southern Railway.

After investigation, CBI filed a chargesheet. The Trial Court found the accused guilty and convicted them.
