GATKA WORKSHOP FOR GIRLS AT KHALSA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, LUDHIANA TO IMPART SELF DEFENCE

GIRLS SHOULD ADOPT GATKA AS A GAME AND FOR THEIR SELF-DEFENCE : GREWAL

Department of Physical Education and Heritage Club of Khalsa College for Women Civil Lines Ludhiana in association with National Gatka Association of India organized a one-day workshop on "Gatka-Sikh Martial Art" at the college auditorium to impart self defence training to the girls.

On the occasion Pritpal Singh Pali, Member, Shiromani Gurdwara Management Committee and President, Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib, Ludhiana attended as a Chief Guest. He explained the importance of the martial art Gatka in normal life to the audience and assured the college principal Dr. Mukti Gill of all possible help regarding the equipment and training.

The main objective of this workshop is to make the youth, especially girls, skilled in self-defence, create awareness about the traditional game and motivate them to adopt Gatka art as a sport.

The girls associated with Gatka Association demonstrated the skills of martial art by performing Gatka.
College Principal Dr. Mukti Gill inspired the girls to join this art and lauded the efforts of dignitaries present, and head of Physical Education Department Dr. Mandeep Kaur and in-charge of Heritage Club Dr Narenderjit Kaur who were the coordinator and co-coordinator of the workshop respectively. Besides, she congratulated all the staff and encouraged them to organise such workshops in future also.

On this occasion, President of National Gatka Association, Harjeet Singh Grewal, giving basic information about Gatka training, Gurmat, Sikhism, and said keeping in view the present situation of eve teasing incidents with the women folk it is the need of the hour to connect the youth, especially girls, with the historical Gatka art to equip them with self defence techniques.

He highlighted various aspects of Gatka and added that the main objective of the national association is to promote Gatka as an international sport and include it in the Olympic Games.
