The city bid a tearful farewell to Amandeep Singh alias Mahi Sodhi on Thursday as the last rites of the builder, who allegedly killed his wife and two minor daughters before shooting himself, were performed at the cremation ground near Zira Gate amid a heavy and mournful atmosphere.

(MOREPIC1)   Two pyres were lit at the cremation ground. Amandeep Singh was cremated along with his elder daughter Manveer Kaur on one pyre, while his wife Jasveer Kaur and younger daughter Parmeet Kaur were consigned to flames on another. Before the cremation, ardas was performed for the peace of the departed souls, after which Amandeep’s brother Harpreet Singh lit the pyres.

The scene at the cremation ground was deeply distressing, with grief-stricken family members, relatives and residents struggling to hold back tears. Amandeep’s elderly mother, Jeevan Kaur, was inconsolable and kept lamenting her fate, repeatedly saying that she never imagined witnessing such a tragic end to her family.

People cutting across social and political lines attended the funeral to express solidarity with the bereaved family. Among those present were local MLA Ranbir Singh Bhullar and Municipal Council president Rohit Grover. Talking to the mediapersons, MLA Bhullar termed the incident extremely painful and said the tragedy had shaken the entire city. He added that he stood firmly with the family during this difficult time.

As reported earlier, four members of the family were found dead under mysterious circumstances at their residence in Harman Nagar on Wednesday morning. Preliminary police investigation indicated that Amandeep Singh (42), who was associated with real estate and financing, allegedly shot dead his wife Jasveer Kaur (40) and daughters Manveer Kaur (10) and Parmeet Kaur (6) before taking his own life.

The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, following which the police handed them over to the family for last rites.
