The Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University, Chandigarh commemorated the United Nations Human Rights Day -2022 with children of Anganwadi Centre at Village Faidan Nizampur.
The event was organised on the UN mandated theme of “Freedom, Dignity and Justice for All” . The key highlights of the human rights outreach program was to empower the children of the Anganwadi session on the issue of 'dignity' for which a dignity workshop was led by Ms. Kanika (Guest Faculty) and Ms. Kavita (SRF).
To inculcate the habit of hand and oral hygiene among the anaganwadi children , the research scholars Mr. Padma, Mr. Gurdeep and Ms. Poonam of the Centre led a demo of correct way of hand washing and brushing teeth. The children were also introduced to the concept of Eco bricks whereby Ms. Sanjana of Semester 1 M.A human rights and duties explained how plastic bottles filled with waste can be converted into useful products such as stools and toys.
The children were excited how waste can be created into wealth in an innovative way. A creative “Tattoo for Rights session” was also conducted wherein Ms. Ravinder created tattoo's on hands of children. Lastly, dignity kits including toothpaste, toothbrush and soaps along with refreshments were distributed to the children of the Anganwadi Centre.(SUBHEAD)
As part of the Human Rights Day Celebrations , the Centre on the eve of the human rights day, 2022 also organized an webinar on the awareness and sensitisation programme on the “Human Rights of Transgenders : Law , Policy and Practice” in joint collaboration with National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, New Delhi.
The resource person was Sr.Advocate Ms. Swati Bidhan Baruah, High Court of Guwahati, Assam's first transgender Lok Adalat judge. She delved on the important provisions of 'The Transgender Person's (Protection of Rights ) Act 2019 and Rules, 2020. She apprised the participants that statutory enactment for transgender welfare is a way forward for ensuring inclusivity , non-discrimination and equality to the LGBTIQA + in all spheres of life. She opined that sensitization of all stakeholders is a must to ensure transgenders lead a dignified way of life.
