“The lifestyle diseases including diabetes and hypertension are increasing among adults and children, which is leading to a rapid increase in cardiac diseases. The heart-related illnesses can be avoided by controlling lifestyle diseases and by following three mantras—eat healthy, exercise regularly and reduce stress”, said Dr HK Bali, Chairman, Cardiac Sciences, Paras Hospital Panchkula, on the occasion of ‘World Heart Day’.

In Chandigarh, over 40% of the adults who are aged above 40, are suffering from hypertension while the recent national survey revealed that 12% of women and 7.1% of men (above the age of 15) have very high blood sugar level.

“Due to a sedentary lifestyle, the cardiovascular diseases are rapidly increasing in India, which is highest in the world. Since heart diseases are now becoming common in younger population, India can soon become the world capital of coronary artery diseases”, Dr Bali said.

While explaining about the tips to prevent hearth-related illnesses, Dr Bali further added that people must eat a balanced diet and avoid trans-fats. “People must exercise or jog, at least for 30 minutes daily. Further, stress should be reduced in daily lives to prevent one from catching the long term heart related issues”, he said.(SUBHEAD)

Dr Bali said that these days, advanced technology is being used to treat the patients that help in faster recovery and lower fatality rate. “For patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction (poor pump function) with multiple coronary artery disease, for whom surgery is not possible or anaesthesia can’t be given and there is no ‘other option’, a new Protected Angioplasty with Stenting (PCI) procedure which uses a miniature heart pump – Impella, is now used for treatment. This advanced treatment has less adverse effects, faster recovery and a better quality of life for these critical patients”, Dr Bali added.

Dr Bali further said that for elderly and co-morbid patients, open heart surgery for valve replacement is not suitable but now, latest non-surgical technique of Aortic Valve replacement – TAVI (Trans catheter Aortic Valve Implantation) treatment is available in which there is no need to open the chest of the patient surgically. As a result, there is very less morbidity, if at all, and the patient can be discharged in 2-3 days.
