After starting the public awareness campaign against water and air pollution two and a half years ago through Apna Abohar Apni Abha Abhiyan, Sandeep Jakhar, who has organized 90 camps till now, was nominated by the Speaker of Punjab Legislative Assembly as a member of that 8-member committee that will try to solve the pollution caused in Budha Nala and Ghaggar river.

The work list for the first meeting of this committee includes discussions with the Punjab Pollution Control Board besides the Water Resources Department and the Local Bodies Department. It is noteworthy that Sant Seechewal, a member of Rajya Sabha, had started the movement in Jalandhar, Ludhiana region to tackle this problem.

Here in Abohar, Sandeep Jakhar, through his campaign, took up the responsibility of cleaning not only the streets, government offices, public places, public parks but also the sub canals around the city. People were made aware that throwing waste material in the canal water which they use for irrigation and drinking is an injustice in itself. The water from the Sirhind feeder reaches these canals, in which the dirty water of Budha Nala and tanneries is poured for the past several years. No effective steps were taken to prevent it by the successive govts.

Sandeep and his team repeatedly urged the people to keep the surrounding environment clean, stop use of polythene and single use plastics as they affect the sewerage system and pollute the environment.

He today said that water pollution is a big problem. Due to this, thousands of people have already fallen prey to deadly diseases like cancer. If this is not addressed, the future of the coming generations will be bleak. He said that due to heavy rains last month, crops in hundreds of acres in Abohar sub division have been damaged, he will also demand compensation to the farmers of waterlogged villages
