Local staff of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) have cautioned customers over fake messages that threaten to disconnect power supply tonight itself. Preliminary investigation reportedly indicated that such messages were received from Bihar.

The Punjab government has announced to waive 300 units of electricity per month from July 1, but the cybercrime gang has allegedly started robbing customers by threatening to cut off electricity connections. Several complaints have also reached the PSPCL regarding this. While advising the customers to be cautious, local staff clarified that the PSPCL never sends a message on the phone to anyone about power disconnection.(SUBHEAD)

A government school teacher also got a similar message saying that because you did not pay the electricity bill for the previous month, your electricity connection will be disconnected at 9.30 pm tonight. The sender of the message asked the teacher to contact the electricity officer at his phone number 6206653717.

After preliminary investigation in this regard, it has come to the fore that the such messages were received from mobile phones which were registered in the state of Bihar and name of the sender has also been accessed reportedlythrough TrueCaller facility.

Some panicked consumers said that on calling at the given number, they were asked to give last 6 words of the ATM card this clears the decks for withdrawing money from their account. EOM
