STARTS SHORT-TERM INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

In an aim to spread awareness on the safe blood donation and blood products during the World Donor Day, the Sohana Hospital Mohali started a short-term internship program for the high school students to impart knowledge.
The first workshop of registered students was conducted in the hospital's Blood Bank, wherein students not only learnt from experts but also got first-hand experience of various medical equipment. The next workshop of these registered students will be held in the first week of July, where the group will get hands-on experience in the department of radio diagnosis”, Dr Soumya Ahuja, medical superintendent of hospital, said.
Meanwhile, Dr Gurmeet Singh, Head of the department, Blood Bank, said, “World blood donor day is celebrated all over the world to recognize the worth of Voluntary Blood donor organizations and donors. For 2022, the World Blood Donor Day slogan is “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives” to draw attention to the roles that voluntary blood donations play in saving lives and enhancing solidarity within communities. The day is also celebrated to raise global awareness on the need for blood products for transfusion, and safe practice of blood donation.”
Blood and blood products, according to the World Health Organization, are critical resources for the effective management of women experiencing bleeding during pregnancy and childbirth, children with severe anemia, patients with blood and bone marrow disorders, inherited haemoglobin disorders, immune-deficiency conditions, victims of trauma, emergencies, disasters, and accidents, among others.
“Apart from the fact that blood donation saves the lives of numerous individuals, the act of giving blood has been related to decreased blood pressure and a lower risk of heart attacks for the donors”, Dr Singh further said.
