The Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mohali, successfully treated a 43-year-old woman suffering with multiple tumours in her left breast, via Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy (R-NSM) with Implant Reconstruction Surgery, using the world’s most advanced 4th Generation Robot – Da Vinci Xi. Fortis Hospital Mohali is the only hospital north of Delhi NCR to offer this cutting edge robot -aided breast surgery.

Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy (R-NSM) is a scarless, minimally-invasive surgical technique wherein the breast tissue is removed through a small hidden incision in the armpit, while preserving the skin flap, nipple and areola. This advanced approach not only ensures effective cancer removal but also helps preserves both the shape and sensation of the breast.

The patient, a 43-year-old woman had been experiencing multiple lumps, skin discoloration and nipple changes in her left breast and thus approached Dr Naval Bansal, Senior Consultant, Breast and Endocrine Cancer Surgery, at Fortis Hospital Mohali. Preliminary diagnosis investigations confirmed that the patient was suffering from multiple tumours in the breast.

Considering the patient’s age, the team of doctors led by Dr Bansal decided to conduct robot-aided Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy (R-NSM) with Implant Reconstruction Surgery. The cancerous breast tissue was removed through a tiny hidden incision in the armpit,. The patient had a smooth, post-operative recovery and was discharged three days after the procedure. Subsequent medical examination reports showed complete elimination of the patient’s breast tumour.

Discussing the case, Dr Bansal, said, “Traditional mastectomy often leaves visible scars on the chest, which can be emotionally distressing for women. However, with Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy the incision is placed in a hidden area, leaving no visible scar. The technique allows quicker recovery, lower re-operative rates and better preservation of sensation compared to conventional surgery.”
