“Mahatma Gandhi had rejected the very first list of “satyagrahis” presented by Chandi Ram Verma of Abohar, for the disobedience movement stating that none of those listed therein was teetotaller,” disclosed Lekhak Parishad president Raj Sadosh.
Speaking at a function held at Swami Keshwanand Senior Secondary School to observe 28th death anniversary of the veteran freedom fighter, he said that C.R. Verma, a former Minister of State in Punjab, while sharing his experiences of the freedom movement with him had also revealed that Gandhi asked for a fresh list.
Later Lala Lajpat Rai visited Abohar to address a rally in the grain market and appointed Verma as chief of the Tilak Swaraj Fund and also asked him to shift his headquarters from Abohar to a small hamlet near Ambala to escape arrest as the British government was trying their best to thwart the satyagraha.
Those who joined Verma’s great granddaughter Nenika Verma in performing the havan yajna and offering flower petals to the portrait of Verma included Sahitya Sadan president Suryakant Rinwa, Gaushala managing committee chief Faquir Chand Goyal, Swami Keshwanand Ayurvedic Hospital incharge Dr. Sandeep Watts andmany others.
Principal Anurag Nagpal recalled how Verma thought of opening a school in the same complex and he was enrolled as the first student.
