The 19 Maratha LI Kolhapur of Indian Army organized a program at the memorial of Major Surinder Prasad, who was martyred while snatching back Indian territory from Pakistan near Gatti Jaimal Singh in Khemkaran Sector during the Indo-Pak war on 23 September 1965. He was honoured with Vir Chakra posthumously in November 1966.

Besides Sumit Godara, the nephew of the martyr, retired civil surgeon Dr DP Godara and Commanding Officer of the 19 Maratha LI laid wreaths at the memorial that had been in 1966 unveiled by Lalita Shastri, wife of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri near Surinder’s alma mater Government Senior Secondary School on the Sahitya Sadan Road.

Dr Godara said that Major Surinder Prasad was the first martyr of the Indian Army from Abohar area. He was the only son of former MLA Master Teg Ram. He made supreme sacrifice for the country in the war that was forced by the neighbouring country Pakistan.
