Renowned Bhajan writer, litterateur and musician Jagdish Sharma (Saral Kavi) of Sriganganagar origin was cremated in Mumbai on Wednesday. His mortal remains were consigned to flames shortly after his family members from Sriganganagar reached Mumbai this morning. A large number of dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
Saral Kavi passed away on Tuesday at the age of 70 in Mumbai. Family sources said that he suddenly complained of breathlessness late last evening. He was admitted to a private hospital. There was some improvement in his condition Tuesday morning but then health deteriorated, he died shortly afterwards. The demise brought shock waves to Sriganganagar and neighboring regions.
(SUBHEAD)He had moved to Mumbai from Sriganganagar about 20 years ago. He wrote bhajans for many music companies including T Series. Renowned bhajan singer Lakhbir Singh Lakha lent his voice to the songs penned by Saral Kavi. Apart from this, many other singers also sang the bhajans written by him. He is survived by wife, two daughters and a son. His son Sargam Jassu is a music director in Mumbai who has given music in many TV serials.
A native of the border town of Gajsinghpur, Saral started writing and singing bhajans in the 70s. In the beginning, he used to write and sing bhajans at Jagrans, was also proficient in guitar and used to play harmonium very well. He also conducted the orchestra group for some time. His column “Ahi Ravan ki Wapsi” in the Pratap Kesari that was published by Kamal Nagpal, was very popular with the readers for years, says old time friend Dr Krishan Ashu. Another friend Sanjay Sethi said that Saral continued hymn writing during his tenure as a columnist.
