BIRTHDAY OF SAHIWAL JAIL BORN INDIAN BOY CELEBRATED

Raj Sadosh/Abohar.

The elderly parents of Ruvel Singh, who was born in the Sahiwal Jail in Pakistan’s Punjab, celebrated his birth day in Bakhu Shah village, about 8km from Fazilka.

The parents recounted that during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, the Pakistani Army captured some border villages in Fazilka; they subsequently incarcerated the Indians in Pakistan’s Sahiwal Jail. At that time, the family of Kashmira Singh, a resident of Bakhu Shah village in Fazilka, was also imprisoned. While there, on May 26, 1972, Kashmira Singh’s wife, Nanki Bai, gave birth to a male child, whom they named Ruvel Singh.

Kashmira Singh recounted that raising a child within the confines of the prison was an extremely arduous task. A few days later, they were transferred to a camp at Gurdwara Ret Sahib. On September 16, 1972, the Government of Pakistan released all prisoners of war.

The family subsequently returned to Fazilka with their children. Ruvel Singh passed away at the age of 42 following an illness. Today, Ruvel Singh’s parents celebrated his birthday by holding his photograph in their arms.

Ruvel Singh is also survived by three sons. Kashmira Singh said that, following the birth of the children, the Government of India provided no financial assistance to their family, despite their having endured imprisonment in a Pakistani jail
