The offices of truck unions in Abohar and Fazilka have been locked due to defiance of the directions issued by the district administration quoting December 13, 2017 orders that banned Truck Unions. Local officials along with dozens of cops entered the local Truck Union office recently and locked the gate after telling the operators to leave the premises.

The Abohar Cotton Factory and Oil Mill Association thanked the administration. The step will give relief to the industry, the Association said. Some fruit growers and marketers described it as a positive initiative that would prevent recovery of “jazia” from mini trucks that were used to transport fruit.

(SUBHEAD)Deputy Commissioner Dr Senu Duggal ordered the police department to take strict action against those harassing traders in the name of so-called truck unions. The DC said that as per Punjab Government notification of December 2017, there has been no existence of truck unions and all operators and traders were free to transport goods with their mutual consent. She said that any trader can transport his goods through any operator.

Even after the clarification was made public on this issue by the administration last month, the Truck Unions in Abohar and other cities of the district have been defying the instructions, traders had complained. The Abohar Cotton Factory and Oil Mill Association had alleged that the truck union was carrying out its normal business here and harassing the business community.

Officials claimed that the Fazilka truck operators voluntarily locked the union office.

The DC said that the truck unions had been banned by the previous govt long back and they now had no legal status. The businessmen were free to take the services of any truck operator for transporting goods as per their mutual convenience. She said that if someone does not stop the misdeeds, the administration will take legal action
