Naresh Kumar/Barnala

A major fire broke out at a garment shop in the main market of Bhadaur town in Barnala district on Saturday, gutting the first floor of the shop and destroying a large stock of clothes and wooden furniture.

According to information, the fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. Shop owner Baljinder Singh said sparks suddenly emerged from electrical wires on the first floor, following which the fire spread rapidly.

As clothes and wooden furniture were stored on the first floor, the flames intensified within a short time. Thick smoke and flames could be seen from a distance, creating panic among shopkeepers and residents in the area.
On receiving information about the fire, Bhadaur SHO Inspector Harsimranjit Singh reached the spot along with a police team.

As a precautionary measure, nearby shops were evacuated to prevent any loss of life in case the fire spread.
Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot after the fire was reported. Firefighters, with the assistance of local residents, battled the blaze and managed to bring it under control after considerable effort. The prompt response prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining shops. The extent of the financial loss is yet to be ascertaine.
