Defending champions Minerva Academy Football Club opened their national round campaign in the AIFF Sub-Junior League 2025–26 with a dramatic and hard-fought 1-0 victory over Jamshedpur FC at the Madras FC Ground in Mahabalipuram on Saturday evening.
Placed in a competitive Group B alongside Jamshedpur FC, Football4Change, and FC Mangalore, Minerva entered the tournament carrying the expectations of defending champions. Their opening test demanded patience, control, and composure — and they found all three when it mattered most.
The match kicked off at 4:00 PM, with Minerva staying true to their trusted 4-3-3 formation, while Jamshedpur FC lined up in a compact 5-3-2, clearly intent on defensive discipline and denying space in central areas.
From the opening whistle, Minerva established their intent. Their pressing was fierce, coordinated, and relentless. Every pass was chased, every second ball contested, and every pocket of space aggressively closed down. Jamshedpur responded by dropping deeper and deeper, forming a low defensive block that forced Minerva to probe patiently for openings. The opening half quickly developed into a contest of attacking pressure against defensive resistance. Minerva controlled possession, dictated the tempo, and pushed the opposition back into their own half. Jamshedpur, however, remained organized, compact, and committed to protecting their penalty area. Despite sustained attacking momentum and territorial dominance, the first half ended goalless.
The second half brought even greater intensity.
Jamshedpur’s defensive shape became even more conservative. At times, all eleven players were positioned behind the halfway line, committed almost entirely to survival rather than progression. Minerva continued to circulate possession, searching for a breakthrough with patience and intelligence. The defending champions created chances. Two clear opportunities arrived, but the finishing touch narrowly escaped them. As the clock moved into the closing stages, the contest began to feel like a test not only of quality, but of nerve.
Then came the decisive moment.
In the 86th minute, Minerva made a substitution that would ultimately shape the evening. On came T. Kipgen — and almost immediately, his presence changed the rhythm of the game. His pace was electric, his direct running fearless, and his dribbling injected fresh urgency into Minerva’s attack. Every touch carried intent.
Deep into stoppage time, at 90+2 minutes, the breakthrough finally arrived.
Collecting the ball on the left flank, Kipgen drove forward with explosive acceleration. He first burst past three defenders with sheer speed before cutting inside, beating two more challenges as he surged into the penalty area. With defenders closing in and the angle narrowing, he kept his composure and unleashed a decisive finish beyond the goalkeeper.
It was a goal of quality, courage, and individual brilliance.
For a moment, the ground paused — and then erupted. Players rushed forward in celebration, teammates embraced, and spectators rose to their feet in applause. It was the kind of goal that transformed tension into triumph.
The final whistle soon followed, confirming a priceless 1-0 victory and a perfect opening to Minerva Academy’s national round campaign.
Beyond the result, this was a performance that reflected the character of defending champions. They were patient without losing ambition, aggressive without losing structure, and composed enough to keep believing until the final seconds.
Group B promises to be fiercely contested, with tough tests still to come against Football4Change and FC Mangalore. But Minerva Academy have already sent an early signal.
Champions know how to win. And on an evening when time was running out and spaces were closing, Minerva found a way.
